Dal Vada - Paruppu vadai

Paruppu vadai  - Mmmm... This is one of the favourite tea time snacks for me and my sister. Nothing can be compared to having this vada along with tea on a rainy evening.

Ingredients:

Channa dal (Kadalai Paruppu) - 1/2 cup
Onion - 1 finely chopped
Red chillies - 1 finely chopped
Curry leaves - a few
Ginger piece - 1 inch

Salt to taste
Oil for frying

Preparation:

  • Soak dal in water for 3 hours.
  • Cut curry leaves and ginger into small pieces.
  • Drain the water and grind the channa dal to a very coarse paste.
    • To this paste, add onions , red chillies, curry leaves and the ginger pieces.
    • Mix them together and make small lemon sized balls with hands.
  • Flatten it slightly  and then slide it into the hot oil. Make sure the oil is hot before sliding in the vadas.
  • Fry both sides till they become golden brown in color and crispy
Repeat the process for all the vadas.

Note: You can add few crushed fennel seeds (saunf/sombhu) for a unique taste.
