Sweet Kozhukattai

Kozhukattai (Modak)
I was talking with my friend couple of days back and she asked me if I can help her with rice flour based recipes. She has bought too much rice flour and she is unable to finish it. The one item that came to my mind immediately was Kozhukattai also known as modak. Of course I agree with you if you are thinking of delicacies like idiyappam , puttu etc. Those are also made from rice flour. But these require special tools and special skills. But Kozhukattai is one item which can be made in just half an hour.No hassles, no special tools and no special skill set. :)

So, I am posting this for her and others who wants a quick snack in the evening.

Ingredients:
Rice flour - 1 cup
Powdered jaggery - 1/2 cup
Grated coconut - 3/4 cup
cardamom powder - 1/4 teaspoon
salt - 1/4 teaspoon
ghee - 1/2 teaspoon
water - 1 and 1/4 cup

Preparation:

  • Dry roast the rice flour till it is aromatic.Do not let the color of the flour change.
  • Dry roast the coconut and jaggery till it combines together and all the jaggery melts. Make it into small balls when it is warm.

  • Boil 1 and 1/4 cup of water with salt and ghee. Use the water immediately when it is boiling hot.
  • Take the rice flour in a vessel and add the boiled water to it little by little and mix it with a spoon. You will require almost 1 cup of water.
  • Oil your hands and mix the dough while it is still hot enough to handle and make it like chapati dough.
  • Now, take a small ball and flatten it and make it like a small cup or a crater. Fill it with one ball of the jaggery mixture.
  • Bring the ends together and make it like a ball and elongate the end a little to make that pretty shape.
  • Keep them in an idly plate and steam it for 10 minutes.
It was so delicious that the whole plate of kozhukattai was emptied in just about five minutes. No exaggeration! Good that I tasted the first one before I served it.So I got to eat at least one. :)
