Rava Upma

Rava Upma

Rava Upma is an easy breakfast dish. I am not doing much of blah blah today and straight going to the recipe :)

Ingredients:

  • Rava (semolina) - 1 cup
  • Water - 3 cups
  • Big Onion (sliced lengthwise) - 1/2
  • Tomato - 1/2
  • Peas - Frozen or fresh - 1 tablespoon
  • Chana dhal - 1/2 tablespoon
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Coriander leaves (chopped) - 1 tablespoon
  • Green chillies(slit lengthwise) - 2
  • salt - as per taste
  • Ghee - 1 tablespoon
  • Asafoetida - a pinch

Preparation:
  • Roast the rava in a pan for few minutes.
  • Soak chana dal in half glass of water for 15 minutes.
  • Thaw the peas if you are using frozen peas.
  • Heat a pan and add ghee. Once the ghee is heated, add mustard seeds.Let it crackle.
  • Add chopped onion, green chillies, chana dal, peas, curry leaves and a little salt and fry them well.
  • Once the onion becomes translucent, add  tomatoes and asafoetida powder and mix well.

  • Add water and bring it to a boil.Add required salt.

  • Once water boils, keep it in medium flame and add the coriander leaves and then add the roasted rava using one hand and stirring constantly with the other hand.
  • You need to stir constantly, else the rava will turn into lumps.
  • Once the rava is cooked, put off the flame and serve hot with chutney / sambhar.
